The Meeting:
Attending this month’s meeting, which started at 7:10 pm, were 25 members, which included a new member, Jim Cummings. Hopefully, he and his wife, Claudia will be joining us on rides this coming season. Ann Salisbury joined us with flyers pertaining to the RI-B breakfast and also the district rally. The RI kickoff breakfast will be held on April 29th and the district rally will be July 16th through July 18th. We had and abundance of guests at this meeting seeking to confiscate our beloved mascot. First came Chap. A who took temporary possession and then came Chap. W with more members who took final possession. I guess now is the time for the explanation of our mascot’s name. F.N.A.a.W stands for Fun Necessitates Adventure and Willingness. It also has another meaning that only members present along with Chapters Mass “A” & Mass “W” know. The Maryland District and Region “B” have a 2009 quilt fundraiser and are selling tickets for $1.00. See Doc for tickets. Sean McCarthy, District Ride Educator from Chapter “A” spoke of his problem with a cracked frame and how American Honda is replacing it under warrantee. If you have an 1800, it may be prudent to check on your frame welds once in awhile. If you haven’t given Ernie your starting mileage for the saddle sores contest, please do so as soon as possible. There are new state inspection regulations which check the visual overview, steering & suspension, tires, wheels, brakes, lighting, frame, engine and exhaust. Be sure to verify your bike before getting a sticker before the end of May. There will be even more check next year. We received a “Thank You” from the Hospice for our donation in honor of Cindy Arruda’s father who passed away. It’s a little early to mention but keep in mind that Dec 5th will be our annual Christmas Party. He hall is already reserved for this event. The meeting concluded at 9 pm with Tom White winning the 50/50 this month.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi Everyone,
There are no more open dates for the Experienced Rider Course coming up in May. My thanks to Sean McCarthy for his due diligence in securing seats for us…
Don’t forget to periodically check out the District web site @ www.gwrramass.org for all kinds of useful information. All of the area chapter events and pre-registration forms are now available. Remember to sign up early for any events you plan on attending.
The weather seems to be breaking once and for all for the upcoming season, and I implore all of you to exercise extreme caution when you’re out riding! Keep the rubber side down, and I look forward to riding with all of you this year…
"Ride safe, have fun, or stay home! "
Chapter Director MA-F : Steve Alvarez
From the “Director’s Chair”…
Well, well, well… For those that were unable to attend this month’s meeting, you missed a good one! Let me start by informing all of you that our mascot F.N.A.a.W. has left the building and has started a new adventure! ? We were joined by not one but two of our fellow chapters, MA-A and MA-W! MA-A showed up as the meeting began with designs on acquiring our fox. In fact, I handed him over to them, and much to the surprise of all (especially MA-A members I suspect), MA-W walked in shortly thereafter with more members and I subsequently retrieved our friendly fox and handed him over to Chapter W… I believe despite MA-A’s disappointment in losing the prize, great fun was had by all! MA-W assures me they will take great care of F.N.A.a.W. as long as they have him in their possession…
A reminder once again that RI-B’s breakfast is slated for April 26th, and our ride schedule officially kicks off on May 3rd. We are heading for Venco Wings on the 9th of May as they celebrate their Open House. I also want to remind you that the monthly breakfast get-togethers have concluded for the ride season.
After we met this month I was informed of the passing of Deidra Tansey’s father Williard Tansey, Jr., also grandfather to her son Jarrid. I also learned of the passing of Mark Abdelnour’s mother Margaret Xifaras. I have offered both families my deepest condolences on the loss of their loved ones on behalf the chapter and GW.
For those in attendance that were searching for a GL1500 for Roger Chartier, search no more! Roger informed me that he in fact purchased his new bike from the crazy lady he was telling us about (after she went out and bought one of those special marking pens to insure his money was REAL!!!!!) Thanks to those of you that were searching for Roger, but he is quite happy with his new toy!!!!!
Chapter F Rider Educator
Safety Note Allan’s tip for this month is T-CLOCS.
This stands for Tires, Control, Lights, Oil, Chassis and Sidestand. This is something to check daily before riding so you don’t have any surprises. Also, at this time of year be very careful of the sand and potholes that are literally all over the place.
HUMOR OF THE MONTH:Europe English
The European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the EU rather than German which was the other possibility.
As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty's Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a five-year phase-in plan that would be known as "Euro-English".
In the first year, "s" will replace the soft "c". Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard "c" will be dropped in favour of the "k". This should klear up konfusion and keyboards kan have 1 less letter.
There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome "ph" will be replaced with "f". This will make words like "fotograf" 20% shorter.
In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be ekspekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkorage the removal of double letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of the silent "e"s in the language is disgraseful, and they should go away.
By the fourth year, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing "th" with "z" and "w" with "v". During ze fifz year, ze unesesary "o" kan be dropd from vords kontaining "ou" and similar changes vud of kors be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters.
After zis fifz yer, ve vil hav a reli sensibl riten styl. Zer vil be no mor trubl or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi to understand ech ozer. Ze drem vil finali kum tru! And zen world!
Honda: History -Soichiro Honda
An Early Honda Motorbike
The man behind Honda is Soichiro Honda, the visionary engineer son of a blacksmith. His dream was to produce an affordable form of transporatation that would be available to everyone.
After WWII public transportation in Japan was very overcrowded and petrol severely restricted. Honda came across a job lot of 500 post-war surplus two stroke engines that were originally designed to power electric generators. These were adapted for attachment to custom bicycle frames and were further adapted to run on turpentine due to the gasoline shortages of the day.
These early Honda motorised bicycles were very popular and the stock of surplus two stroke engines soon ran out. Using the surplus motor as a blueprint Honda designed and built his own 50cc engine. This was incorporated into the first complete Honda motorised bicycle, the A-type, commonly known as the Chimney due to the amount of smoke and the smell of turpentine that they produced.
In 1948 Honda introduced a 90cc version of the Chimney, called the B-type. This was followed by the D-type which was Honda first true motorcycle. This model was called 'The Dream' because it fulfilled Soichiro Honda's dream of producing his own, complete motorcycle.
Early Honda S500
Honda continued to develop better and faster motorcycles leading to the devlopment of the C72 in 1959 which was the fastest 250cc motorcycle available at the time. In 1969 Honda won the first of a string of victories at the Isle of Man. Soichiro Honda had always been keen on racing motorcycles and Honda quickly amassed a number of prestigious wins.
